SEPTEMBER 2004 ITINERARY FOR WOODS TRAVEL

 

 

DAY 1-ARRIVAL

 

A leisurely day to relax and unwind in the hotel.

Our guests will be greeted in the traditional Croatian way with a RECEPTION offering a variety of home-made brandies and Prosek, a fortified wine of the region, dried figs and appetizers.

 

 

DAY 2-DUBROVNIK

 

10am Guided Tour of the Old City of Dubrovnik.

Our guest will be met at the Hotel and taken on a guided tour around Dubrovnik where they will be familiarized with the ancient architecture of the City and will be introduced to the many famous buildings within the City walls, including the Rectors Palace, the oldest pharmacy in Europe, the Cathedral and many other unforgettable sites.

 

12pm Return to Hotel, rest of the day free to enjoy the sea and sun, have some lunch or do as the ‘Croats’ do and have an afternoon siesta before dinner.

 

 

DAY 3-THREE ISLAND CRUISE

 

9.45am Leaving from the Old Harbor of Dubrovnik, our guests will be met by the Boat (75 seater) and be taken on a fabulous costal cruise to the three closest (Lopud, Sipan, Kolocep), of Croatia’s 1185, islands.

On board there will be a variety of drinks offered along with appetizers.

The islands are stunning and extremely picturesque. The islands are close to Dubrovnik, overgrown with thick pine forests that go right down to the edge of the sea. The clear blue sea abounds in fish and shellfish. Our guide will recall the many myths and countless legends that were born within the shade of the scented plants and trees found in these rural settings. It is guaranteed that after visiting these wonderful islands one will become intoxicated with the still calm, the scent of the Mediterranean plants and the infinite colors of the Adriatic. The guests will have a chance to buy lunch on the second island.

Back in time for dinner.

 

 

DAY 4-FOLK DANCING

 

21.30pm an evening performance of LINDO (folk dancing). There the guest will enjoy a 2 hour performance of folk dancing where the performers are dressed in traditional costume indigenous to this region, set in Lazareti, a medieval fortress within the City Walls.

 

 

DAY 5-VISIT TO THE TRSTENO ARBORETUM

 

9.15am Leaving the Hotel reception, the guest will be taken to the Botanical Gardens of Trsteno, there a flora and fauna specialist will give a guided tour of the gardens where plants from all around the world can be found which were brought here by ancient sea merchants. There will be the opportunity to see Europe’s largest ‘Plane’ tree at the entrance.

This will be a half day excursion.

 

 

DAY 6-TRIP TO THE ‘KONAVLE’ VALLEY

 

10am Full Day guided excursion by coach South along the Adriatic Highway, following the eastern edge of the KONAVLE VALLEY then turning inland after about 25km to cross the lush agricultural valley to visit what was once an old mill at the side of a fast flowing river which has now been converted into an exclusive restaurant with waterwheels and waitresses in national costume. From here a short walk along the water's edge through the woods to an original working corn mill. Here there will be a demonstration by the miller dressed in his national costume. Then back towards the north along the opposite side of the valley, with the mountains on one side and the Konavle plain on the other. We will stop for an included lunch at the 300 year old Katusic family restaurant to sample food cooked in the traditional way under a bell covered with hot ashes. The coach will then continue to the top of the mountain for a photo stop of the panoramic view of the Zupa Bay showing a 60 mile expanse of coastline.

 

 

DAY 7-WINE TASTING TRIP

 

2.0pm Afternoon WINE TASTING excursion to the Konavle vineyards where there will be opportunity for the guest to sample a selection of homemade wines served with home-made cheese and bread. There will also be a talk by the vineyard owner on the process of making the wine and the various wines produced in this region. Traditional live music in the cellar will be enjoyed as an accompaniment.

Depending on the time of year, the guest may get the opportunity to ‘get their hands dirty’ and go into the field and pick the grapes to be able to participate in the wine making process.
